Russian Hybrid Plasma Induction Cold Crucible Melter

The Diagnostic Instrumentation and Analysis Laboratory (DIAL) (http://www.msstate.edu/Dept/DIAL/) at Mississippi State University, in conjunction with the United States Department of Energy, has established a collaborative agreement with the Russian Institute of Chemical Technology in Moscow to demonstrate and adapt a Hybrid Plasma Induction Cold Crucible Melter (PICCM) for waste recycling applications.  The pilot-scale apparatus for treatment of solid mixed radioactive wastes, a Plasmatron with Induction Cold Crucible Melter (PICCM), was developed within the framework of the JCCEM project in FY 1996-97, (V. Gotovchikov, Principal Investigator, Institute of Chemical Technology).  For more information see: Topical Report DIAL 40395, TR-96-2, February 1999.

The device has proven itself in laboratory and pilot scale tests.  Additional work is in progress so that it can be considered for application at DOE sites.
