Contaminant Transport and Site Characterization

Waste management operations at the former Soviet Union's three nuclear production and reprocessing sites in the West Siberian Basin have been discussed openly by Russia since the early 1990's.  Studies are being conducted jointly by DOE and MINATOM under the JCCEM.  Efforts under this program are a part of the DOE Characterization, Monitoring and Sensor Technology Crosscutting Program.  Its mission is to apply unique expertise and innovative solutions for environmental characterization and monitoring problems to support focus areas to accomplish safe and cost-effective closure of 80% of DOE sites by 2006 and more challenging sites by 2030.
